Aging is surrounded by several alterations that can contribute for the frailty onset which leads to the development of incapacities. In this context, elderly people who present some dimension of frailty may experience the institutionalization process, which in turn may worse the frailty syndrome.. We aimed to analyze the physical and cognitive frailty of institutionalized elderly in a municipality in Sergipe. There was a screening among 40 elderly residents of a long-term care institution using a health status and socioeconomic questionnaire. Subsequently, the selected elderly (n=5; 72.6±8.6 years old), after signed the informed consent term, responded to the Kihon Checklist; participated in physical tests battery: Time Up and Go, Five Chair Stand, One Leg Stand and Handgrip Test; and by the cognitive test battery: Mini Mental State Examination and Scenery Picture Memory Test. In total 60% of the elderly were frail according to the KCL total score. However, analyzing the domains separately, the domains: socialization, memory and mood, demonstrated a greater percentage of frailty. Among the physical tests, in the TUG all volunteers spent more than 10s to perform the test; 80% of them didn’t achieve the cutoff point of handgrip and one leg stand tests; 60% regarding five chair stand test. All investigated elderly presented cognitive frailty when assessed by cognitive tests. This study reinforced the evidences regarding the physical and cognitive frailty profile of institutionalized elderly, underling the urgent need for measures to approach this syndrome, comprehending prevention and treatment actions, through an interdisciplinary professional team.
