Due to high levels of pollution and environmental degradation, Brazil tries to implement an environmental policy that can reduce the damage caused by it. The generation of solid waste is one of the factors that has most negatively impacted the environment, due to the inadequate disposal that has been given by most municipalities. In Brazil, controlled landfills and dumps, considered environmentally unsuitable for waste disposal, have caused a great environmental impact because they receive various types of waste, without any arrangement to avoid social and environmental damage. Thus, the landfill, said to be more environmentally friendly, has emerged as an alternative for solid waste disposal. In 2005, in Salgueiro, Pernambuco, a landfill was installed in the municipality, which today serves other municipalities in the central backwoods region. In the literature, few scientific studies have proposed to evaluate the impacts of the installation of this landfill in the region. Thus, this paper aims to analyze the social and environmental impacts caused by the implementation of this landfill, comparing with the period in which the final disposal of the waste was an open dump.
