Resumo: Rural workers are exposed to several health factors, especially occupational risk factors. Exposure to pesticides is associated with various damages to the human body, including blood cells, so it is essential to understand the epidemiological behavior of environmental and occupational haematological diseases in order to establish protective measures for health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hematologic alterations present in the hemogram of rural workers. A cross-sectional study of 576 rural workers exposed to agrochemicals in the municipalities of Lagarto, Salgado and Boquim in the central southern region of Sergipe, Brazil. The majority of the participants were male (418/72.4%), married/stable union (309/53.7%),rural community (325/56.5%), with low schooling (301/47.8 %), economic class D/E (297/51.6%), with a mean age of 41.2 ± 13.3 years, nonwhites (400 69.4%), non-smoker (473/82.2%). The majority of respondents reported having some type of contact with the pesticide at a frequency greater than 30 days (332 / 57.6%), but 82% (472) did not receive training to deal with pesticides and 85.4% (492) of farmers use of personal protective equipment. In the hemograms, alterations were observed in 31.8% (183) of the erythrograms, 52.8% (304) of the leukograms, 5.38% (31) of the plaquetograms and 18.6% (107) of the first two concomitantly. The following alterations were noted in descending order: lymphocytosis(176/30.56%),eosinopenia(108/18.75%), neutropenia (105/18,23%), hemoglobin elevation (102/17,71%), reduction of hematocrit (90/15,62%), leucopenia (80/13,89%), elevation of HCM (74/12,85%) and anemia (69/11,98%). The predominant platelet abnormality was thrombocytopenia (29/5.03%), with only two cases of thrombocytosis (0.35%). Leukogram alterations and reduction of erythrogram parameters were more frequent in females; however, only lymphocytosis showed a significant difference between males and females. The findings of this study suggest that exposure to pesticides may be related to hematological changes in this population.

The findings of this study suggest that exposure to pesticides may be related to hematological changes in this population.
