Resumo: INTRODUCTION: The research carried out in the city of Lagarto / SE at the Clinic-School of Speech-Language Pathology at the Federal University of Sergipe showed that the demands in the school clinics are large and that in the Speech-Language Pathology area there is a prioritization of individual care, which leads to long queues, and consequently the worsening of the disease in patients waiting for care. All of these factors have a negative impact on the management of speech therapy offered to the community of the city of Lagarto and region. Thus, this study aims to know the profile of the users and thus seek ways to optimize speech therapy care. MATERIAL AND METHOD: For this purpose, it was based on a documentary, descriptive and retrospective study in view of the fact that the patient's medical charts and the patients who were disconnected or who were discharged were observed. The following aspects were observed: age, gender, professional referral, patient complaint, speech-language diagnosis and waiting time. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The most frequent diagnostic hypothesis was in the Language area, followed by Orofacial Motricity and Voice. The prevalence of speech-language disorders was in males, with emphasis on the language area (70%), followed by the area of orofacial motricity (57%). Of the active records that presented information about schooling, the following results were identified: the highest percentage (30%) were children enrolled in the Infant Education modality, (21%) finished Elementary School, and (18%) completed High School. This result also includes the Residency Outpatient Clinic and the Technical Service Ambulatory. This result includes the Clinical-School and Residency profile. In relation to age, the profile ranged from 2 to 70 years. Regarding the waiting time, the data showed that the users wait for an average time of 2 years or more.CONCLUSION: After collecting and analyzing the data, we can conclude that the area of greatest demand is the Language followed by Orofacial Motricity, Voice, Vestibular Rehabilitation and Auditory Rehabilitation. With regard to the waiting time for service, this data may mean the need for other services linked to the public network, but may also be related to agility in service. As final considerations, we suggest: i) use of time markers to manage speech therapy; ii) clinical care programs to meet the demand such as the accomplishment of therapeutic groups or extension programs; iii) establishment of stricter rules regarding the lack of interest in therapy as faults and non adherence to speech and language therapy.
