Resumo: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH) seems to be more frequent in adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD), which has a negative impact as it increases the recurrence of pharyngitis and leads to sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), thus raising the risk of polymerization of hemoglobin S and, consequently, phenomena vaso-occlusive and other complications. The objectives of the work were: to verify the frequency of HAT in adolescents with SCD; observe if there is an association between HAT, age and gender within the age group studied, and to correlate the presence of HAT with clinical characteristics and complications in adolescents with SCD. Its about an analytical observational study, consisting of a study group composed of 48 adolescents with SCD and a control group formed by 38 adolescents without the aforementioned illness. All adolescents underwent oropharyngoscopy with frontal light and nasal video endoscopy). The presence of ATH was considered when the palatine tonsils were in degrees three or four of the Brodsky scale (1989) and/or when the tonsil pharynx occluded the choana in at least 70% (1st criterion) or 50% (2nd criterion). We found 28 adolescents in the study group (58.3%) and seven adolescents in the control group.(18.4%) had ATH when the 1st tonsil obstruction criterion was used pharyngeal When using the 2nd criterion, 22 (45.8%) adolescents in the study group and four (10.5%) adolescents in the control group received this diagnosis, with no significant difference between the frequencies in the two groups regardless of the criterion of obstruction used. There was no association between gender and the occurrence of HAT in both groups. There was only association between HAT and age in the study group and at the age of 12 years. It was concluded that HAT was associated with SCD in adolescents in the sample studied; the age of 12 years was the most affected by HAT in adolescents with the SCD diagnosis and there was no association between gender and the occurrence of ATH

There was no association between gender and the occurrence of HAT in both groups. There was only association between HAT and age in the study group and at the age of 12 years. It was concluded that HAT was associated with SCD in adolescents in the sample studied; the age of 12 years was the most affected by HAT in adolescents with the SCD diagnosis and there was no association between gender and the occurrence of ATHA hipertrofia adenotonsilar (HAT) parece ser mais frequente em adolescentes com doença falciforme (DF), o que traz um impacto negativo na medida em que aumenta a recorrência de faringites e leva a distúrbios respiratórios do sono (DRS), elevando assim o risco de polimerização da hemoglobina S e, consequentemente, fenômenos vasoclusivos e outras complicações.
