Introduction: Cognitive alterations during gestation have been a singularity reported within the literature and are likely to cause physiological hormonal oscillations, which may trigger memory changes, cause forgetfulness, compromise patient care, and influence the process of medication adherence in pregnant women. Aim of the study: To evaluate the association between cognitive functions during gestation and medication adherence. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with pregnant women at the Center for Integral Attention to Women's Health, located in the city of Aracaju, between April and July 2017. Patients with a minimum education of four years and in use of at least one prescribed medication were eligible for the study. For the medication adherence analysis, the Morisky's therapeutic adherence scale (MMAS-4) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) for the determination of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) were used. Results: Conclusion: There was no significant association between medication adherence and memory factors assessed during gestation in this study, indicating a need for further investigations on the impact of hormonal levels on cognitive functions and the relationship they may play in the process of nonadherence to pharmacotherapy during pregnancy.
