Resumo: The most popular sport in Brazil and in the world, it had a very modest and restricted beginning, configuring football as an elitist sport at the end of the 19th century. Over the years, football overtook popular sports like rowing, gaining the attention not only of young people, but also of clubs that practiced maritime activities. Observing the growing popularity of football in the early 20th century, these clubs adopted this sport as a sporting activity, without realizing the impact it would bring to the life of Brazilian citizens. Thus, this article aims to analyze how football was received by the citizens of Aracaju (SE), from the analysis of the book "Roteiro de Aracaju", by the writer Mário Cabral, which reports the daily life of the people in a smooth, differentiating itself from the elitist intellectuals and policies in force at that period. Cabral includes in his daily reports a space for sports, among them is football.

Ao longo dos anos, o futebol desbancou esportes populares como o remo, ganhando a atenção não apenas dos jovens, mas também dos clubes que praticavam as atividades marítimas. Observando a crescente popularidade do futebol no início do século XX, esses clubes adotaram este esporte como atividade esportiva, sem ter noção do impacto que traria para a vida do cidadão brasileiro. Dessa forma, este artigo tem como objetivo analisar como o futebol foi recebido pelos cidadãos de Aracaju (SE), a partir da análise do livro “Roteiro de Aracaju”, do escritor Mário Cabral. Este autor que relata o cotidiano do povo de uma forma suave, diferenciando-se dos intelectuais e políticas elitistas vigentes daquele período.
