This article deals with the increase in the maternal mortality rate and its impacts on society. Attention to pregnant women is extremely important as they are in the risk group. This article aims to research the situation of maternal mortality with the pandemic, listing its risks and contextualizing it with the present, in order to verify whether the situation is serious or catastrophic and how to avoid the catastrophe, what are the challenges and what alternatives are found. With regard to methodological procedures, it is a bibliographic and documental research in order to build knowledge about the subject that is still quite new. The results demonstrate that there is indeed a serious risk for pregnant women and therefore they need to be informed and helped by the state. The conclusion is that maternal mortality in Brazil already had high numbers. The weakened health system at the moment is unable to attend to all the pregnant women who could have their lives spared with a simple prenatal care. The lack of public policies caused this critical state in Brazil. As tools to reduce this rate of maternal mortality, the ECA appears, which in its article takes care of puerperal women.
