Resumo: This article discusses the formative assessment process involved in the practice of coco de roda, a traditional and popular type of dance of Alagoas, and raises the issue about the understanding of the relationships between its practice and cultural contexts such as the making processes of a house from “pau-a- pique”, the work developed by professor Pedro Teixeira de Vasconcelos and the juvenile groups of coco de roda, more specifically of the XiqueXique group, active in the Jacintinho neighbourhood. As an objective, it intends to contribute with studies about the coco dance from Alagoas, as well as with reflections on the teaching and learning processes of traditional and popular Brazilian dances. Tradition is presented as a key-category for the reflections developed, taking Gidens' propositions as the main reference. Used for bibliographical research and to discover comprehensive (KAUFMAN, 2013). In the empirical field of the study of the Xiquexique group, participant observation and an adapted application of the discussion group method were carried out based on Weller's references (2006, 2011). It is concluded that each time-space has its own cultural dynamic implications that can provide processes of transmission of tradition insofar as it remains connected with the experience of everyday life.

Como objetivo, pretende contribuir com os estudos acerca do coco alagoano e com as reflexões acerca dos processos de ensino e aprendizagem das danças tradicionais e populares brasileiras. Tradição apresentou-se como uma categoria-chave para as análises e reflexões desenvolvidas, tomando como principal referência as proposições de Gidens (1997, 2003). Utilizamos a pesquisa bibliográfica (CAVALCANTI, 1997; VASCONCELOS, 1998; entre outros) e entrevistas compreensivas (KAUFMAN, 2013). No campo empírico do estudo sobre o grupo Xique-xique, foram realizadas observação participante, e uma aplicação adaptada do método dos grupos de discussão a partir dos referenciais de Weller (2006, 2011).
