Resumo: The surfactants, which are compounds with a great number of properties and functions, are used in both industrial and household applications. However, synthetic surfactants used nowadays are toxic to the environment and not biodegradable. Many cases of environmental contamination have been reported. Studies have been conducted to find solutions to minimize these damages. Biosurfactants present as solution, since they are biodegradable compounds produced by microorganisms with properties similar to the surfactant. This study describes the types of surfactants, as well as their application and the importance of substituting them for biosurfactants.

Os surfactantes, que são compostos com inúmeras propriedades e funções, estão presentes em grande escala em diversos produtos na indústria, bem como no ambiente doméstico. Contudo, apesar da grande utilidade, os surfactantes não são degradáveis, além de muito tóxicos ao meio ambiente. Vários casos de contaminação ambiental provocados por esses tensoativos já foram constatados, por isso é importante uma alternativa para a minimização de tais danos. Com empenho a descobrir soluções, pesquisas têm sido feitas com intuito a descobrir novos métodos para a fabricação de biossurfactantes, que são compostos biodegradáveis de composição microbiana com propriedades semelhantes às dos surfactantes.
