The role played by the longshore drift in the stretches near the mouth of the Sergipe river is important for understanding the sediment dispersal along the coast. The contiguous coast line to the right and left banks of the Sergipe river, municipalities of Aracaju and Barra dos Coqueiros, respectively, composes the study area of this work. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the role played by wave refraction in sediment dispersion along the Sergipe river mouth: Atalaia (Aracaju) and Atalaia Nova (Barra dos Coqueiros) beaches. The methodology included the manual construction of wave refraction diagrams for the waves of quadrants E, SE and S (periods 6, 7, 8 and 10 s) and the calculation of the potential intensity and direction of longshore sediment drift. The predominant direction of the longshore sediment drift obtained was from NE to SW, and the results obtained from the potential intensity of the longshore sediment drift and, consequently, the sediment dispersal indicated on the beach: (i) Atalaia Nova: erosive trend in sector II to the waves of quadrants E and SE, and depositional trend in sectors I and II to the waves of quadrant S; (ii) Artistas (sector III): erosive trend independent of the waves quadrant and period; (iii) Atalaia: erosive trend in sector IV independent of the waves quadrant and period, erosive trend in sector V to the waves of quadrants E and SE, and depositional trend to the waves of quadrant S, and depositional trend sector VI to the waves of quadrants E and SE. Understanding the sediment dispersal along the shoreline is critical to better understanding the dynamics of the coastal zone.
