INTRODUCTION: The Tongue Test is a protocol used in newborns with the objective of early identifying possible alteration in their lingual frenulum. The alteration may be the cause of some limitations of the organ movements (mobility) during sucking, and may also generate speech alterations during its development process in the child. GENERAL OBJECTIVE: To analyze the knowledge of the mothers about the Tongue Test and its importance in breastfeeding, guiding them on the subject. METHODOLOGY: This is a descriptive research. A descriptive analysis of the data was performed in a quantitative and qualitative manner by means of mean, standard deviation, absolute frequency and relative frequency. The data resulting from the questionnaires were analyzed using the Excell program. The research was carried out at Zacarias Júnior Maternity, in the city of Lagarto-SE, through the application of a semi-structured questionnaire in the beds, with mothers who delivered at the institution, from May to September 2019. It was defined as subjects of the survey 30 postpartum women, constituting a sample of thirty questionnaires. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The analysis of the questionnaires showed that 93% of the puerperal women are not aware of the Tongue Test; 97% said they did not know what it was for; 90% of respondents. They were unable to tell which problems the Tongue Test can avoid in the newborn and 27% of the mothers said they had relatives with stuck tongue. CONCLUSION: The research shows that the knowledge of the puerperal women on the tongue test is superficial, regardless of the age, education level and income of the puerperal women. It is necessary to have public strategies on these aspects to improve the quality of care offered to mothers and their babies.
