Resumo: Introduction: Thoracic hyperkinesis is the increase of the thoracic curvature above 40° with potential risk in the individual's functionality. This postural alteration may be related to the use of backpacks by schoolchildren, poor posture and behavioral habits and may impair musculoskeletal development due to the phase of structural changes due to age. Objectives: to identify the presence of thoracic hyperkinesis in schoolchildren of the public network of Lizard / SE, besides comparing the degree of thoracic kyphosis among female and male schoolchildren, to identify the models of backpacks used by schoolchildren, to verify the relationship between the weight of the backpack, posture and behavioral habits of schoolchildren with the degree of thoracic kyphosis. Methods: The were Fifty-five subjects, 50 girls and 25 boys, from the 4th to the 6th year and 10 to 12 years of age participated in the study. To compare the data, we measured the height, the students' weighing and their backpacks. The angulation of thoracic kyphosis was measured by a flexible ruler called flexicurve and the posture, behavioral habits and manner of use of the backpack were evaluated by the Back Pain and Body Posture Evaluation Instrument (BackPEI).Results:A percentage of 70.6% of the students presented thoracic hyperkinesis. There was no significant difference between the sexes in the degree of thoracic kyphosis (p> 0.05). There was also no association between hyperkyphosis and backpacking, behavioral and postural habits of schoolchildren. The majority (98.7%) of the students used a backpack. Conclusion: Thoracic hyperkinesis was a prevalent deviation in the evaluated age range, did not differ between the sexes and did not present a relation with behavioral habits, posture and weight carried in the school backpack.

Back Pain and Body Posture Evaluation Instrument (BackPEI).
