Resumo: The rapid growth of the population brings with it an increase in sewage generation and consequently an increase in expenses with its treatment, often causing these effluents not to be treated properly. In Brazil, the deficiency of the coverage rate of sewage services has generated a significant portion of sewage discharged into the water bodies without proper treatment, causing the compromise of water quality and its respective uses, as well as causing damage to the environment and the environment public health. Thus, the high demand for low cost treatment processes has been taking place and with this, anaerobic digestion systems have been gaining prominence, especially the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket - UASB, which are highly efficient in the treatment of high effluent. Organic matter content. In this context, the main objective of the study was to evaluate the performance of UASB of the ERQ-Sul sewage treatment plant, located in the city of Aracaju, Sergipe state. Raw (affluent) sewage samples collected after the grating stage and treated (sewage) effluent samples collected at the aeration tank inlet were subjected to analysis of physicochemical variables and through these it was possible to evaluate the treatment efficiency of digesters through their ability to remove organic material (COD and BOD5) and solids (sedimentable and total suspended), as well as to evaluate their operational stability (pH, temperature and alkalinity). The results obtained for the removal of biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, sedimentable solids and total suspended solids were respectively 59%, 56%, 79% and 51%, which reached values close to the average removal efficiencies proposed in the literature for this treatment system and in the sewage treatment plant design, when quoted. Regarding operational stability, the average temperature and alkalinity in the effluent were 29.16 ° C and 299.84 mg / L and in the effluent 28.49 ° C and 384.06 mg / L, while the effluent pH was between 7.15 and 7.48, indicating that the process developed within the normal range for these variables.
