It presents the performance of the professional librarian in front of the public information unit, showing that the advantages when hiring this information professional are indisputable. However, the social function of the professional librarian is a factor worthy of diffusion, so that the community is aware that the formation in Librarianship is not something vague, without necessity, but it is indispensable both in the educational as in the social sphere. It is a research developed in the environment of the municipal public library located in São Cristóvão, State of Sergipe. With one of the most important aspects of information democratization, it is defended based on the literature of the area, the Brazilian Federal Constitution and also the laws that govern the profession of the librarian. The professional librarian is very cited and presented in this research, because the pretension is to make noticeable the presence of this in public information units, expanding information as a requirement to achieve true citizenship. Access to information is a social right guaranteed by the Brazilian Magna Carta in paragraphs XIV and XXXIII of article V, and thus the obligation of the librarian is to effect what is on paper, making the users the reason for performing all the activities which come develop.
