Resumo: This article analyzes and comments on the text "Introductory Ideas to the Study of History," authored by Tobias Barreto de Menezes (1839-1889). In order to do so, this work lists and explains the main theses contained in the text, elucidates the influences underlying both the writing and the thought of Tobias Barreto, and clarifies his conception of History. Thus, in undertaking this task, this article draws upon the works of the author and the specialized literature on each topic raised. Additionally, this publication also includes a facsimile of the text originally published in “Revista do Norte”, by Artur Orlando (1858-1916).
