Resumo: INTRODUCTION: Elderly frailty syndrome has been conceptualized as a clinically diagnosed condition, resulting from the decline of physiological and functional reserves, and dysregulation in several systems. OBJECTIVES: To identify and classify the elderly regarding fragility, as well as to characterize the demographic and socioeconomic profile and to compare the risk of functional vulnerability and the risk of falling according to the fragility classification. METHOD: Cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative study with 49 elderly men and women. Data were collected through a questionnaire with sociodemographic variables, the Edmonton Fragility Scale, the QuickScreen, and the Functional Clinical Vulnerability Index-20. RESULTS: The man age was 67.68 ± 6.43 years, with the majority of the elderly being women, with middle school education level, browns, married and income up to one minimum wage. According to data collected by the Edmonton Fragility Scale, 29% were classified as non-fragile, 27% as pre-fragile and 44% as fragile. There was a difference between the non-fragile and fragile elderly groups for the risk of falling (p <0.05), and there was a difference in vulnerability between the fragile and the other two groups (non-fragile and pre-fragile) (p <0, 05), with worse scores for the frail elderly group. CONCLUSION: There was a predominance of elderly women classified as fragile, with low education and low income. The frail elderly group presented a higher risk of falling and clinical and functional vulnerability.
