Força muscular e independência funcional em pacientes hospitalizados por doenças respiratórias agudas e crônicas agudizadas

Introduction: Respiratory diseases affect millions of people worldwide, being the most frequent causes of illness and deaths reaching all age groups, mainly children and the elderly. In Brazil, hospital admission rates due to respiratory diseases (ICD-10X) occupy the first place in the country, with great socioeconomic impact. Objective: To evaluate the muscular strength and functionality of patients hospitalized for acute and chronic acute respiratory diseases. Method: A cross-sectional study performed in patients diagnosed and hospitalized with acute or chronic acute respiratory diseases. The evaluations were performed through the Medical Research Council (MRC), Functional independence measure (MIF), manovacuometry and palmar grip dynamometry in patients admitted to the Lagarto University Hospital. Results: Fifty-six patients were included in the analysis, 40 belonging to the G1 group (acute respiratory disease) and 16 in the G2 group (chronic respiratory disease). In both groups the peripheral muscular strength was diminished. The MRC lower members showed a negative negative correlation in the G2 group (r = -0.44) with the length of hospital stay. Respiratory muscle strength showed a decrease with statistical significance when compared to predicted (p: 0.0001). Palmar grip strength (PGS), MRC and respiratory muscle strength showed regular and strong correlations, but FIM showed no correlation with these variables Conclusion: Therefore, considering the studied sample, there was a significant reduction of peripheral muscle strength and respiratory muscle strength with statistical significance when compared to the predicted, showing significant positive and negative correlations and interferences between the variables studied in both groups groups.
