Resumo: | In the last twenty years, there has been a considerable increase in the use of pesticides in the Brazilian agricultural sector, due to the growth in demand, caused by a population explosion combined with the large production of commodities. As a result, there was also an increase in cases of pesticide poisoning, which has been considered a public health problem. The objective of the present study was to identify possible cases of intoxication and the perception of risks of the use of pesticides in rural workers. A cross-sectional, observational, descriptive and analytical study was carried out with a quantitative approach. The sampling was non-probabilistic for convenience, including workers from the rural area of Monte Alegre de Sergipe. The research was approved by the Ethics and Research Committee of the Federal University of Sergipe. Data were organized and analyzed using the BioEstat program, version 5.0. Spearman's correlation was used to measure the degree of association between variables. Statistical significance was considered when p<0.05. Our results showed thar male public (53%) was the most exposed to pesticides, working directly with the application of the product in the field. Only 16% of volunteers reported did not use pesticides on the plantation, even having indirect contact with the product. Among the 100 interviewed individuals, 67% did not reach high school, 40% buy the substances from self-employed sellers and 35% do not receive any guidance on their use. Only 10% of the sample reported using personal protective equipment (PPE). The most frequent symptoms reported was headache (82%), followed bybody pain (65%) Our results suggest that Monte Alegre de Sergipe has been following the global trend of inappropriate use of pesticides, in especially with regard to its application, since there was a lack of information on issues such as signs of intoxication and use of PPE. We observed an inadequate epidemiological surveillance since many cases of intoxication appear to be underreported. In this sense, it is necessary to apply educational public measures about worker safety, in order to alleviate the damage to health caused so far, as well as to prevent further injuries. |

We observed an inadequate epidemiological surveillance since many cases of intoxication appear to be underreported. In this sense, it is necessary to apply educational public measures about worker safety, in order to alleviate the damage to health caused so far, as well as to prevent further injuries.
