Resumo: INTRODUCTION: Ultraviolet radiation is primarily responsible for the development of solar lesions on the skin, with emphasis on skin cancer. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) endorses the use of sunscreens to prevent these harms. Furthermore, for this information to be acquired and used by the population, correct guidance by dermatologists is needed. OBJECTIVE: To analyze health promotion by dermatologists in relation to photoprotection, in a reference unit, in the municipality of Lagarto, Sergipe, from 2021 to 2022. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is an observational descriptive study of an epidemiological nature, conducted at the Centro de Especialidades Médicas in the municipality of Lagarto, state of Sergipe, between 2021 and 2022, with a sample number of 303 respondents, composed of individuals who were in the waiting room for care dermatological. Data were collected through a questionnaire developed by the researchers themselves and were analyzed using the Excel (2021) program through descriptive statistics and association analysis. RESULTS: 314 patients participated in the research. Of these, 77.1% (242) reported having been previously instructed by dermatologists about the harmful effects of sun exposure and the importance of photoprotection. It was possible to observe a greater use of sunscreen (OR 2.22; p=0.003) among individuals who received guidance and that individuals with a higher level of education received more guidance (OR 2.63; p=0.023). However, it was shown that individuals with higher skin phototypes (III-VI) received less guidance compared to light-skinned individuals (OR 0.49; p=0.011). CONCLUSION: It was noted that most research participants received dermatological guidance on sun photoprotection, and there is a positive relationship with greater use of sunscreen. However, there’s a conflicting relationship between receiving recommendations and applying them in everyday life. Therefore, further studies are needed to assess whether these results are also found in other studies in the country.
