The present Conclusion of the Course "Our Lady of Mercy Convent: preserving the collection through the preservation and restoration of rare and special works" seeks to investigate the importance of preserving rare works by preserving and restoring the collection. The research methodology was descriptive, exploratory, in which the “Our Lady of Mercy” Documentation Center and Special Library’s became the case study. The highlighted institution belongs to the secular church that housed Capuchins from Europe, especially Italians, with the objective of catechizing peoples in Brazil. In this way, a collection was constructed with primary documents, periodicals, books, ecclesiastical documents, civil records, reports, in an organized and documented way. Considering the historical and power relations existing between the Catholic Church and the citizenship, the documentary information present in the collection is of great interest, and the investment in the preservation of the media represents documentary and scientific interest in the Brazilian society. The main objective of this research was to analyze the actions carried out by means of conservation and restoration measures of the rare collection and special documents. In which the specific objectives were presented, such as: presenting the historical context and conceptual; to identify the techniques of safeguarding and the librarian and documentalist practices by the documents management; to verify the procedures for the preservation of the rare and special works developed. The study focuses on concepts that are primordial to preservation, such as memory, historical heritage, as well as concepts of preservation, restoration, conservation. Besides the survey of the state of the art, the testimony obtained through the interview conducted to the member of the Capuchin Order was fundamental for the reflection on restoration, conservation of a collection of rare works, allowing the librarians to understand the regiments and maintenance of an institution secular.
