Condições de saúde bucal e conhecimento em saúde materna e infantil de gestantes no município de Lagarto- SE

Introduction: Scientific evidence highlights the importance of adequate oral health during pregnancy, as well as the role of the mother in transmission of oral health habits to their children. However, despite being a priority group within the family health public strategy, little is known about the oral health conditions of the pregnant population, both in State of Sergipe and throughout Brazil. Objectives: To evaluate the oral health condition of pregnant women who perform prenatal care in the public health service in the city of Lagarto (Sergipe, Brazil) and investigate their knowledge and beliefs about maternal and infant oral health through the application of questionnaires and CPO-D/ IHOS indexes evaluation. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in the Basic Health Units (UBS): Dr. Davi Marcos de Lima and José Antônio Maroto, in the Municipality of Lagarto-SE, where, through questionnaires and assessment of the CPO-D and IHOS indexes, 34 pregnant women who were undergoing prenatal medical care at these UBS were evaluated. Results: The average CPO-D index found was 8.7 (± 6.5), average higher than the same indication in the countryside State of Sergipe for the approximate age range of pregnant women. In addition, a significant portion (23.56%) presented deficient IHOS values. 38% of the women said they had a complaint about their oral health currently. However, almost half (44.1%) did not remember the last time they went to the dentist and 76.4% never heard about a “prenatal dental care” public service. Conclusions: The results point to the need to implement health actions related to preventive measures and implementation or effectiveness of prenatal dental programs in the city, in order to improve the oral health of pregnant women and their future children.
