In the 1930's, in Brazil, writers dedicated to prose fiction, formed outside the Rio-São Paulo axis, turned their eyes to themes that were almost forgotten in the Brazilian literary world. It is a theme focused on regional social realities and values. In this context, we highlight a group of Northeastern writers who played an important role in revitalizing the concepts of regionalism and regionality in the first half of the twentieth century. In the present work, we will deal with the novel The Shadow of the Patriarch (1950), by the Sergipe writer Alina Paim, a work that, due to its aesthetic characteristics, can be included in the regionalist literary production known as the "Romance of the Northeast." In this novel, the political engagement of Paim is evident, which has left throughout his work the mark of his critical and combative view on the social role of women in Brazilian society, especially in the Northeast in his time. We will find here how the Marxist concept of class struggle and the presuppositions of feminism, which gained a theoretical body in the postwar period, give ideological support to the literary transposition of relations involving women in a specific historical context, the agrarian Northeast of social structure typically patriarchal period of the first half of the twentieth century.
