Resumo: The use of medicinal plants for therapeutic purposes is increasing over time, this promotes the insertion of new substances in the pharmaceutical market for use in human diseases, highlighting those caused by microorganisms. Currently, public health has been struggling with increasing bacterial resistance, worsened by the difficulties in discovering new drugs. Maytenus rigida Mart., Is a plant popularly known as "Good-name", belongs to the family Celastraceae and its genus, Maytenus, is considered pantropical. Used in folk medicine, it is used in cases of general pain, infections and inflammation. This study aimed to identify the main chemical constituents, as well as to evaluate the antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity of the hexanic fraction of M. rigida. Phytochemical prospecting was analyzed from a set of colorimetric and precipitation reactions. The presence of groups of flavonoid and triterpenoid-type metabolites found in the fraction used was observed. For the cytotoxic evaluation the MTT assay was performed using the J774 macrophages cell line. The viability of the treated cells was greater than 75%, demonstrating the absence of cytotoxic effect. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated by determining the inhibition halos by the Mueller-Hinton agar diffusion method, and the minimum inhibitory concentration by turbidity of the culture broths. Based on these tests, it was verified that the fraction used showed antimicrobial activity for Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Enterobacter aerogenes, with inhibition halos of 9 mm, 14 mm and 15 mm respectively. The experiments were done in triplicate, analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey test post (p <0.05). Thus, the hexane fraction showed secondary metabolites that corroborate a potential effect on the antimicrobial and biological activity, besides significantly favoring the viability of J774 macrophages.
