Avaliação de pacientes pediátricos internados com diagnóstico de diarreia aguda em um hospital público face às novas recomendações de organização mundial de saúde

Objectives: Assess the adequacy of the new recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the management of pediatric patients hospitalized with acute diarrhea. Methods: This research was designed along the lines of a descriptive study, with data collected prospectively and performed in a tertiary level public hospital. Inclusion criteria for the study were the diagnosis of acute diarrhea at admission and age less than five years. The chronic diarrhea was the only exclusion criterion. The data were collected between March and May 2013, through on medical records or interviews with those responsible for patients, using a standardized questionnaire, which contained clinical and epidemiologic information. Results: Were evaluated 40 patients. Those who needed to be rehydrated (36 patients), the majority (97.2%) used the plan C (intravenous hydration), and the repair solution crystalloid used was less than half of the cases. Regarding the use of zinc, only 5% was awarded the new recommendation. But the use of antibiotics during hospitalization was high (87.5%). Conclusions: Most patients were managed in a manner discordant of therapy recommended by the new recommendations.
