This work seeks to analyze the potential theoretical contributions of Latin American Marxism based on the elaborations on the state by Agustín Cueva and Ruy Mauro Marini. The state is presented in most manuals of International Relations (IR) as the most important entity among the actors of international relations, permeating the main objects of analysis of the discipline. However, as a concept or institution, few are the theoretical works that have deepened in analyzing it, causing its definition to be considered given and based on the classic definition that the State is a national-territorial totality that detains the legitimate monopoly of violence and the production and repeal of laws. That said, for its realization, the work has a qualitative approach of analysis carried out by bibliographic research with systematic literature review as a means of helping to answer the question of how the writings of Latin American Marxist thinkers taken as examples can contribute to the study of IR. In this regard, we believe that based on the reflections of these authors, such historical materialist analysis can offer a theoretical framework for research on the characteristics of states, especially those considered dependent, their internal organization of power and social classes, thus influencing the asymmetries and contradictions of international relations.
