Resumo: Introduction: The hair is in constantly exposed to physical and chemical damages, requiring the constant elaboration of new formulas that allow the repair, hydration and strengthening of the strand structure. Objective: In this context, the present work aims to develop and characterize a hair mask using coconut oil to hydrate the strands of hair. Method: The coconut oil was hot extracted under reflux for 24 hours. The obtained oil was submitted to quality control by means of the following tests: peroxide determination, iodine number, density, saponification, pH and determination of fatty acids. The mask was developed with concentration of 3 and 5% of coconut oil. The product was evaluated through the tests: organoleptic characteristics, viscosity, pH, spreadability, volatile materials, formula stability. Results:The oil presented physicochemical results within the values recommended by the current legislation, with a value of pH 4.9, peroxide, saponification and iodine index were 3.28, 259 and 5.39 respectively and the density was 0.91 g/mL. The results of the F1 and F2 formulations of the capillary masks were stable. The pH value was 5.2 and 5.6; the density was 0.85 and 0.95 g/mL; the viscosity was 41,000 and 45,000 Pa.s; and the spreadability was 6500 and 6079 mm2 for formulations F1 and F2 respectively. Conclusion: The extracted coconut oil is suitable for use in cosmetic formulations and formula F1 was less dense, with lower viscosity and greater spreadability. To define which formula to be marketed, a sensorial evaluation by the target pubic and the capillary hydration power of the formulations is necessary.
