Resumo: When considering that glycemic control is related to self-care of diabetes mellitus (DM) and, therefore, to the knowledge and attitude to the disease and its treatment, to investigate these variables can support the planning of nursing care for this population. Objective: to evaluate the knowledge of the disease and treatment and attitudes/promptitude for self-care of people with this disease and its connection to sociodemographic and clinical variables. Method: quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study, carried out with 121 individuals with type 2 DM, treated at the Clinic of the University Hospital of the Federal University of Sergipe. Three tools were used, one for sociodemographic and clinical characterization of the participants, another for evaluation of knowledge of DM and its treatment, called Knowledge Scale Questionnaire - DKN – A, and finally the Diabetes Attitudes Questionnaire - ATT - 19. Results: the average age of participants was 60.6 years old, most were female (80.2%) and had studied up to the elementary school (69.4%). The median time from diagnosis of DM was 15.7 years, 43.8% were using oral anti-diabetic and 53.7% did not practice regular physical activity. As for the evaluate of knowledge, 52.8% had equal or lower scores than eight, indicating low knowledge of DM and its treatment. Regarding attitude, 98.3% had scores less than or equal to 70. Conclusion: the majority of individuals were elderly, female, with incomplete elementary school and had the disease for approximately 15.7 years. About half of the subjects had low knowledge of the disease and a large majority had low attitude/promptitude for self-care. Younger individuals showed more knowledge of DM, while the female and with shorter study showed better attitude/promptitude for self-care.
