Uso da fotobiomodulação a laser em pacientes com disfunção temporamandibular e sua influência na qualidade de vida e de sono: uma revisão narrativa

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is characterized by changes in the temporomandibular joint and mastigatory muscles, resulting in orofacial pain and difficulty in basic functions, such as chewing and speaking. This study sought to understand the relationship between TMD, quality of life, sleep quality and the effectiveness of using laser therapy as a treatment modality. Patients with TMD often report reduced quality of life and sleep disturbances, amplifying the negative impact of the disorder on their lives. The use of laser, especially low power laser, has emerged as a promising therapeutic option, providing pain relief and improved mobility of the affected joint. A literature review was carried out, through an active search for information in the databases: Pubmed, Medline, Scielo and Lilacs, without language restriction, in the period from 2013 to 2023 and 11 articles were inserted. 17 results were found in Pubmed, 2 in SciELO, 13 in Medline and 3 in Lilacs. Those that did not fit the inclusion criteria were excluded, and finally, 14 articles were included in the work. The research concluded that this treatment modality can not only relieve the primary symptoms of TMD, but also improve the quality of life and, consequently, the quality of sleep of patients. Therefore, laser therapy can be a valuable tool in the multidisciplinary approach to TMD treatment.
