Resumo: The attack of the weevil, Zabrotes subfasciatus (Bohemann, 1833), directly affecting the commercial value, the quality of the grains, making them unfeasible for consumption. In order to seek alternatives for the integrated management of this pest, in this study, the possible resistance of different bean and broad bean varieties to attack by Z. subfasciatus was evaluated. Therefore, bioassays with and without choice were carried out, using a completely randomized experimental design (CRD), with 6 treatments and 6 replications. For the no-choice bioassay, plastic pots with a volume of 50 cm3 were used, containing 10 g of grains of each bean variety and infested with seven couples confined for a period of seven days. For the bioassay with a chance of choice, plastic arenas were used, lined inside with styrofoam trays and coffee cups with 10 g of seeds of each variety. In the no-choice bioassay, the number of viable and non-viable eggs, number of emerged insects, and the duration of the biological cycle (egg-adult) were evaluated. In the free-choice test, the number of viable and non-viable eggs was evaluated and, based on these data, the index of preference for oviposition was estimated. According to the results, the variety fava-branca and black beans had the highest number of viable eggs (± 90%). On the other hand, fava beans and fava had the highest mortality values (> 83%) and biological cycle duration (± 70 days). In the free-choice bioassay there was no significant variation in the oviposition rate and all varieties studied were attractive to the insect. Therefore, broad bean varieties can be classified as resistant to weevil attack and black beans as susceptible.
