This research consists of pointing out and analyzing through the study of characters and narrators, the capricious attitudes of Brás Cubas (in the novel Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas) and Janjão (in the short story “Teoria do Medalhão”), both Machadian works; to compare the novel and the short story with focus on the family relationship and the environment as the main influencers in the behavior of the characters in question. In addition, based on desires in a dominating way, due to the simple fact that the smallest part of the Brazilian population occupies a higher social status to be present in the social structure. For such knowledge we use bibliographic methods, such as an analytical course of the chapters of the novel Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas (1994 a) and the short story “Teoria do Medalhão” (1994 b); the types of narrators and the resources used to construct the texts from the critical studies of Leite (2002) and Brait (1985). Finally, to present the dominance and volubility of the narrator and character of the referred novel in the light of the writings of Schwarz (2000).
