This study has the aim to promote a reflection on the status of women in the early twentieth century, as this is represented in the Corumbas of Amando Fontes, novel that highlights the everyday of women of the working class in the 1930s, in the city of Aracaju at the time the industry was consolidating, showing the effects of capitalism on social and work relationships that regional context. Through a detailed study of the work and grounding in theoretical texts on the novel of the Northeast, a trend in which the novel is set, and on issues involving gender relations, it is proposed here to analyze how, highlight so critical aspects related to life and to women's conditions in the given context, the Corumbas is characterized as a novel denouncing social problems resulting from the effects of capitalism in a society marked by the chauvinistic ideology of patriarchal society. Among the theoretical texts that served as a reference to this work, we highlight the study of Mary Del Priore (1997) and Elodia Xavier (2007), with regard to issues involving women in Brazilian society at the time, and Antonio Candido (1989) and Alfredo Bosi (1970) with regard to the novel approach and its historical and literary context.
