This research was developed aiming the study of the Sesquicentennial festivities that marked the year 1972, during Emílio Garrastazu Médici’s government (1969-1974). The event had a wide calendar of celebrations that rocked the country in a wave of nationalistic boasting and remembrance of important facts in the history of Brazil, which allows us to inquire about the zones of consensus and dissent to inquire about the zones of consensus and dissent around the military regime in the early 1970s. From this point of view, we specifically analyze how the submission process of the movie “Os Inconfidentes” directed by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade and released that year took place, keeping in mind the existence of speeches with clear political nature and attack towards the military, the research discuss the strategies utilized by the left-wing artists who sought to communicate with the public after the institutional Act nº 5 (AI-5) edition.
