Avaliação da presença de sintomas de ansiedade e depressão em estudantes de Medicina da Universidade Federal de Sergipe-Campus Lagarto

The presence of psychiatric disorders during academic training is common, with the depressive and anxious being the most present. Depression and anxiety are multifactorial disorders that involve several aspects that must be taken into account for evaluation, follow-up and treatment. These pathologies can affect the academic life of the student, causing him to abandon his activities, leave his social circle or even give up the graduation. This research evaluated symptoms of anxiety and depression in 143 medicine students from Federal University of Sergipe- Lagarto. The participants had answered to two questionnaires, the BDI (Beck Depression Inventory) and BAI (Beck Anxiety Inventory in collective applications between classes. The main results showed that 25.87% of the students presented some degree of anxiety from mild to severe, and 24.47% from mild to severe depression. The highest prevalence was found in females (68.57% of cases of depression and 70.27% of anxiety cases, both mild to severe) and significantly higher rates of depression in the second year (45.45% of moderate cases and 66.67% of the severe ones), and anxiety in the second year (55.56% of the moderate cases and 50% of the severe ones) and in the fifth year (37.5% of the severe ones), which corresponds to when they become interns. These results show the importance of the evaluation and monitoring of emotional well-being during the graduation period and of the creation of student mental health support services.
