The use of medicinal plants represents a very widespread therapeutic method in several regions of the world since the dawn of civilization. This practice has been incorporated into the Unified Health System (SUS) since 2006 and corresponds to the treatment of choice for various problems, especially for populations that have frequent access to rural areas. For this reason, this work sought to evaluate the use of medicinal plants among citrus growers of Lagarto and Salgado-SE. This is an epidemiological and observational cross-sectional study, whose information was obtained through the application of a semi-structured questionnaire to rural workers inserted in the orange crop. At the moment of the interviews were collected information about the sociodemographic aspects, plants used, therapeutic purpose of the plants, main health problems that affect the workers, medicines used, among others. This project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Most of the participants in the survey were men, adults, with low level of schooling. 70.0% reported making use of medicinal plants for therapeutic purposes and reported not knowing that medicinal plants can do some kind of ill to health. In both localities the lemon grass was the most cited plant with 54.7%. Regarding the purpose 51.9% pointed to the cure of pain in general, the leaves being the part of the plant most used. Through this study, it can be concluded that the use of medicinal plants is a widespread practice today, with significant importance for rural populations who use land not only to obtain financial resources, but also to extract elements applied to their own subsistence, contributing to the strengthening of the preservation of popular knowledge about medicinal plants.
