Resumo: The present work analyzes the patrimonialization process of the São João Batista Chapel, a building belonging to the former architectural group of the Sergipe Industrial Factory (SISA), located in the industrial district of Aracaju-SE. The Industrial district was formed by the foundation of textile industries and creation of workers' villages that had as one of the forms of leisure the participation of religious activities in the church founded by the owners of SISA. From a process of gentrification of the working-class neighborhood, the church was threatened with destruction because of a private enterprise, generating strong popular commotion in the neighborhood and the academic milieu. The research seeks to understand how the valorization of the good as cultural heritage happened in the middle of the conflict of interests between the private initiative and the community.

O bairro Industrial foi formado pela fundação de indústrias têxteis e criação de vilas operárias que possuíam como uma das formas de lazer a participação das atividades religiosas na igreja fundada pelos donos da SISA. A partir de um processo de gentrificação do bairro operário, a igreja foi ameaçada de destruição por causa de empreendimento privado, gerando forte comoção popular no bairro e no meio acadêmico.
