This paper aims at revisiting the work of Álvares de Azevedo with an aesthetic approach in order to show the relevance of the concept of the sublime both to his critical thinking on poetry and his praxis as a poet. This proposal will hopefully show the pivotal role played by the sublime in Brazilian Romanticism as a whole, something that has been neglected by the traditional literary history and criticism. This more traditional approach has mostly emphasized the political aspects of this literary movement, especially its role in the construction of a national identity. In order to achieve the paper’s goals, I intend to (i) clarify the general relation between the sublime and Romanticism; (ii) briefly show how the Brazilian romantic movement was interpreted by traditional literary history; and (iii) to evince the crucial role played by the sublime in Álvares de Azevedo’s critical and literary works.
