RESUMO: O presente artigo busca discutir as implicações tensivas que a construção do herói do romance O Ateneu: crônica de saudades, de Raul Pompeia, coloca em jogo diante das reflexões desenvolvidas por Georg Lukács sobre o herói problemático, no que diz respeito, principalmente, à relação do herói do romance realista brasileiro ser uma criança, que é retirada do seio familiar para ingressar no ambiente escolar, e a consciência da problematização que vivencia como conflito a relação do herói com o mundo exterior e consigo próprio, fundamental à concepção de herói problemático. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Romance moderno. Herói problemático. Consciência.        ABSTRACT: The present chapter seeks to discuss the tensions that the construction of the hero in the novel O Ateneu: crônica de saudades, by Raul Pompeia, places in the face of the reflections developed by Georg Lukács on the problematic hero, with respect mainly to the relationship of the hero in the Brazilian realist novel be a child who is taken from his family to enter the school environment and the consciousness of problematization that he experiences as a conflict the relationship of the hero with the outside world and with himself, fundamental to the conception of problematic hero.
