RESUMO: Um dos principais entraves encontrados por estudantes brasileiros que pretendem participar de programas desenvolvidos no exterior, como o Ciência Sem Fronteiras e o Idioma sem Fronteiras, é a falta de proficiência em língua inglesa e, consequentemente, a ausência de uma certificação internacional que comprove a competência do candidato nas quatro habilidades linguísticas. Ampliando-se o foco para a influência que um exame de proficiência exerce no processo de ensino e aprendizagem, o efeito retroativo, este artigo tem como objetivo investigar o impacto exercido pelo exame IELTS em um curso preparatório voltado à certificação de proficiência com vistas à mobilidade estudantil promovida pelos referidos programas. Este estudo se justifica por juntar-se às pesquisas nacionais e internacionais na área de avaliação em língua estrangeira, tendo como foco principal o vocabulário como um dos aspectos principais da proficiência linguística. Objetiva-se contribuir para que os envolvidos no processo de ensino e aprendizagem de língua estrangeira, sejam eles alunos, professores ou examinadores, se conscientizem dos aspectos envolvidos em contextos que consideram a importância de uma proficiência apropriada, aquela para fins de uso futuro de uma língua estrangeira. Certificação Internacional.        ABSTRACT: One of the major constraints encountered by Brazilian students who want to participate in programs developed abroad, such as Science Without Borders and Language without Borders, is the lack of proficiency in English and, consequently, the lack of an international certification that proves a candidate’s competence in the four language skill domains. Expanding the focus for the influence of language proficiency exams on the teaching and learning process, the washback effect, this article aims to investigate the impact of IELTS exam on a preparatory course aimed at the certification of proficiency toward student mobility offered by these programs. This study is justified by the eventually increasing research in the area of language assessment, focusing primarily on vocabulary as one of the main aspects of language proficiency. It is intended to help those involved in the teaching and learning process of foreign languages, whether they are students, teachers or examiners, become aware of the aspects involved in contexts that consider the importance of appropriate proficiency, that for the future use of a foreign language..
