RESUMO: Neste artigo, proponho uma leitura poética do Romanceiro Sergipano, a partir de um cotejo entre três poemas, a saber: “Sweet William’s Ghost”, balada escocesa coligida por Thomas Percy, “Leonor”, tradução/versão de Alexandre Herculano do poema “Lenore”, do poeta pré- romântico alemão Gottfried August Bürger, e “Cântis”, versão da romanceira D. Josefina, de Estância-SE, desse mesmo poema do século XVIII. Apoiado em diversos autores, meu objetivo é estabelecer uma reflexão sobre as tensas relações mantidas historicamente entre a cultura popular e a cultura letrada, através da dialogia que se estabelece entre os textos cotejados. Cultura letrada.   ABSTRACT: In this article, I propose a poetic reading of the Romanceiro Sergipano, from a comparison between three poems, namely: “Sweet William’s Ghost”, Scottish ballad collected by Thomas Percy, “Leonor”, Alexandre Herculano’s translation of the poem “Lenore”, by the German pre-romantic poet Gottfried August Bürger, and “Cântis”, version of the singer D. Josefina, from Estancia-SE, of that same poem of century XVIII. Supported by several authors, my aim is to establish a reflection on the tense relations historically maintained between popular culture and literate culture, through the dialogue that is established between the texts collated.
