RESUMO: Este trabalho analisa como é feita a representação da personagem morte no texto As Intermitências da Morte, do escritor José Saramago, e em sua tradução para a língua inglesa, intitulada Death with Interruptions, sob autoria de Margaret Jull Costa, tomando como aporte teórico a Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional e usando os métodos de Linguística de Corpus. Através da análise dos processos associados à personagem morte/death, constata-se que, no texto fonte, ela é descrita em relação ao mundo à sua volta e ao mundo interno de sua mente, mais do que em termos de suas características e relação com outras entidades. No texto alvo, por sua vez, ela possui uma relação mais estreita como o mundo exterior, e sua descrição é feita em termos de sua situação no tempo/espaço e de suas características e de como se relaciona com outros seres. José Saramago.        ABSTRACT: This paper analyzes how the character death is represented in the text As Intermitências da Morte, by José Saramago, and in its English translation, under the title Death with Interruptions and written by Margaret Jull Costa. It takes Systemic-Functional Linguistics as the theoretical framework and employs Corpus Linguistics methods. Through the analysis of the processes associated with the character death, we find that, in the source text, she is described in relation to the world around her and the inner world of her mind, rather than in terms of her characteristics and relationship with other entities. In the target text, in turn, she has a closer relationship with the outside world, and she is described in terms of her placement in time and space, her features and how she relates to other beings.
