Floristic inventory of Brejo do Creator, a wetland in the valley of the coastal tablelands of Espírito Santo

Resumo: Aquatic vegetation and its attributes, such as the ability to retain pollutants, are important indicators of the quality of aquatic ecosystems. However, the flora of these ecosystems at the bottom of valleys in the coastal plains of Espírito Santo State has never been evaluated, even with the profound changes in land use arising from large port developments recently In this work, we carried out a floristic survey and show how native aquatic vegetation is distributed along the zone caused by flood pulses in Brejo do Criador, in the extreme south of the State. The area is characterized by the occurrence of 48 species, 36 genera, and 16 families and predominantly herbaceous vegetation, with emerging shrubs and species tolerant to flooding, but its structure is greatly affected by cattle trampling and herbivory. Despite this, flood pulses guarantee the permanence of species typical of aquatic environments. Our results make it possible to reduce the environmental neglect of these areas and bring important reference values for similar areas, mainly due to the speed of change in land use and population growth in the region.

Sin embargo, la flora de estos ecosistemas en el fondo de los valles de las mesetas costeras de Espírito Santo nunca ha sido evaluada, incluso con las profundas alteraciones en el uso del suelo derivadas de grandes proyectos portuarios en los últimos años. En este trabajo, llevamos a cabo un levantamiento florístico y demostramos cómo se distribuye la vegetación acuática nativa a lo largo de la zonación provocada por los pulsos de inundación en el Brejo do Criador, en el extremo sur del estado. La zona se caracteriza por la presencia de 48 especies, 36 géneros y 16 familias, con una vegetación predominantemente herbácea, arbustos emergentes y especies tolerantes a la inundación. Sin embargo, su estructura se ve afectada por el pisoteo y la herbivoría del ganado. A pesar de esto, los pulsos de inundación garantizan la persistencia de especies típicas de entornos acuáticos. Nuestros resultados ayudan a reducir la negligencia ambiental en estas áreas y proporcionan valores de referencia importantes para áreas similares en el futuro, especialmente debido a la rápida alteración del uso del suelo y al crecimiento poblacional en la región.A vegetação aquática e seus atributos, como a capacidade de reter poluentes, são importantes indicadores da qualidade dos ecossistemas aquáticos. Entretanto, a flora destes ecossistemas em fundo de vales nos tabuleiros costeiros do Espírito Santo nunca foi avaliada, mesmo com as profundas alterações no uso do solo advindos de grandes empreendimentos portuários nos anos recentes. Neste trabalho, realizamos um levantamento florístico e demonstramos como a vegetação aquática nativa se distribui ao longo da zonação provocada por pulsos de inundação no Brejo do Criador, no extremo sul do estado. A área caracteriza-se pela ocorrência de 48 espécies, 36 gêneros e 16 famílias e vegetação predominantemente herbácea, com arbustos emergentes e espécies tolerantes à inundação, mas sua estrutura é bastante afetada pelo pisoteio e herbivoria do gado. Apesar disso, os pulsos de inundação garantem a permanência de espécies típicas de ambientes aquáticos.
