Medicalization, mental health and gender: perspectives on the use of psychotropic drugs by women (Argentina)

Resumo: The medicalization of life acquires its own characteristics in mental health, and is ramified by the development of thepharmaceutical industry. In Argentina, statistics indicate that women are more likely to be prescribed psychopharmaceuticals, witha trend towards the feminization of their use. The research in which this work is framed intends to prioritize the interpretive analysisof the senses around the use of psychotropic drugs, and to observe, especially, the situation of women. The article analyzes this topicas a social research problem and exposes some conceptual lines after a background review. The theme is introduced based on socialstudies in mental health, quantitative data is shared and research is retrieved that analyzes uses and routes of users. Finally, it delvesinto how the gender perspective becomes important in mental health studies and, more specifically, in the use of psychoactive drugs.

En Argentina, las estadísticas indican que las mujeres tienen mayor probabilidad de que se les prescriban psicofármacos, con una tendencia a la feminización de su uso. La pesquisa en la que se enmarca este trabajo se propone jerarquizar el análisis interpretativo de los sentidos en torno al uso de psicofármacos, y observar, especialmente, la situación de las mujeres. El artículo analiza este tema como problema de investigación social y expone algunas líneasconceptuales tras una revisión de antecedentes. Se introduce la temática partiendo de los estudios sociales en salud mental, se comparten datos cuantitativos y se recuperan investigaciones que analizan usos y recorridos de personas usuarias. Finalmente, se ahonda en cómo la perspectiva de género cobra importancia en los estudios en salud mental y, más específicamente, enel uso de psicofármacos.A medicalização da vida adquire características próprias na saúde mental, e é ramificada pelo desenvolvimento daindústria farmacêutica. Na Argentina, as estatísticas indicam que as mulheres são mais propensas à prescrição de psicofármacos,com tendência à feminização de seu uso. A pesquisa em que este trabalho se enquadra pretende priorizar a análise interpretativados sentidos em torno do uso de psicofármacos e observar, principalmente, a situação das mulheres. O artigo analisa estetema como um problema de pesquisa social e expõe algumas linhas conceituais após uma revisão de antecedentes. O tema éintroduzido a partir de estudos sociais em saúde mental, dados quantitativos são compartilhados e são recuperadas pesquisasque analisam usos e percursos dos usuários.
