Resumo: “The lamp of the Esquina” was the first gay newspaper with political engagement inBrazil, becoming a reference in the debate on gender issues in the 1970s during the militarydictatorship, commonly called Brazilian left has engaged in the dispute that involved a range ofsocial and political issues. However, starting from the reports of “The Lantern”, the left’s shares at the time, referring to LGBT demands, may be questionable. Thus, this article aims to analyze the 47 newspaper editions searching for content that evidence of the tensions between the left and the LGBT movement in the period in which it was printed. Today most of the left acts in defense of sexual freedom and against gender oppression. However, through this analysis, it was observed that LGBT causes were the last to be understood as policy issues by the left of the time.

Durante a ditadura militar, a comumente chamada esquerda brasileiraengajou-se na disputa que envolvia uma série de questões sociais e políticas. Entretanto, partindose das reportagens do “O Lampião”, as ações da esquerda da época, referentes às demandas LGBT, podem ser questionáveis. Sendo assim, este artigo teve como objetivo analisar as 47 edições do jornal buscando por conteúdos que evidenciassem as tensões existentes entre a esquerda e o movimento LGBT no período em que ele era impresso. Hoje a maior parte da esquerda atua na defesa das liberdades sexuais e contra as opressões de gênero.
