Three Biblical Women Capable of Building an Alternative Female Identity

Resumo: Feminism and the Bible have maintained a difficult relationship throughout history. Western culture is born in part out of the Judeo-Christian tradition, assuming as its own the ancient perception of women that is present in Scripture. Many Biblical accounts have been used to justify and maintain a patriarchal ideology throughout the centuries. Since Biblical stories still can construct the identity of a human group, it is convenient to rescue some female protagonists who can provide an alternative female identity, although they have not always been adequately valued so far. The Beloved of the Song of Songs, Deborah, and Judith are three Biblical characters that break the female clichés of their time and provide a model of women different from the traditional and could be quite contemporary to us.

La cultura occidental nace en parte de la tradición judeocristiana, asumiendo como propia la milenaria percepción de la mujer que está presente en la Escritura. Muchos de los relatos bíblicos han sido utilizados para justificar y mantener una ideología patriarcal a lo largo de los siglos. Puesto que los relatos bíblicos siguen teniendo capacidad para construir la identidad de un grupo humano, conviene rescatar algunas protagonistas que no siempre han sido valoradas adecuadamente y que tienen capacidad para ofrecer una identidad femenina alternativa. Débora, la amada del Cantar de los Cantares y Judit son tres personajes bíblicos que rompen los clichés femeninos de su momento y ofrecen un modelo de mujer diverso al tradicional y que puede resultarnos muy actual.A Bíblia e o feminismo têm mantido uma relação difícil ao longo da história. A cultura ocidental nasce em parte da tradição judaico-cristã, assumindo como sua própria a antiga perceção das mulheres que está presente nas Escrituras. Muitos dos relatos bíblicos tenham sido usados para justificar e manter uma ideologia patriarcal ao longo dos séculos. Uma vez que os relatos bíblicos continuam a ter a capacidade de construir a identidade de um grupo humano, é apropriado resgatar alguns protagonistas que nem sempre foram devidamente valorizados e que têm a capacidade de oferecer uma identidade feminina alternativa.
