Reverence for Life: A Plea for an Ecocentric Counterculture in the Anthropocene

Resumo: This essay provides a synthetic and exploratory review of the ecocentric strand in the field of ecopolitical thinking as has been stated by Robyn Eckersley in his masterpiece published in the 1990´s. From this starting point, the authors seek to build creative bridges linking Eckersley´s ecopolitical model to creative insights based upon complex systems, biology of cognition, and transdisciplinary ecological learning. Besides, the text show some projections of this line of thought in the current ecopolitical debates around the concept of degrowth and the post-development appraisal of neoliberalism. A radical change of perception in dealing with the structural drivers of the global socioecological crisis is considered in the text as a crucial requirement in the search of an ecocentric-based way of living at the crossroads of the Anthropocene.

A contribuição de Robyn Eckersley para a maturação de uma teoria política do ecologismo de corte ecocêntrico é assumida como um ponto de partida. A intenção é explorar as possibilidades de maturação da sua abordagem com base em aportes extraídos das pesquisas mais recentes em epistemologia da complexidade, biologia da cognição e aprendizagem sistêmica-transdisciplinar. De forma cursiva, o texto leva também em conta os desdobramentos desta linha de argumentação nos debates em curso sobre o enfoque de decrescimento convivial no movimento de crítica pós-desenvolvimentista do ideário neoliberal.
