Resumo: The susceptibility of two renal cell lines, one bovine cell line (GBK) and one leporine cell line (RK13) to bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus - IBR) as well as the ability of this virus to survive at low temperatures, were studied in the present paper. The infectivity of BHV - 1 was maintained during the 3 months testing period when stored at -80ºC and -20ºC. Nevertheless, samples kept at -20ºC presented lower titles than those stored at -80ºC. Samples kept at -20ºC in the presence of a cryoprotectant and samples kept at -80ºC presented similar titles. Samples from GBK and RK13 cells, stored at 4ºC, remained viable after 44 and 32 days, respectively. Furthermore, GBK were more susceptible than RK13 cells to BHV-1, independently of the storage temperature.

Furthermore, GBK were more susceptible than RK13 cells to BHV-1, independently of the storage temperature.O presente trabalho tem a finalidade de estudar a suscetibilidade de duas linhagens celulares renais, uma de bovino (GBK) e outra de coelho (RK13), ao herpes-vírus bovino 1 (BHV-1 = vírus da rinotraqueíte infecciosa bovina - IBR) e verificar a sua viabilidade a baixas temperaturas. O BHV-1, quando estocado a -80ºC e a -20ºC, manteve sua infectividade em ambas as linhagens celulares, durante o período avaliado de 3 meses, embora o título apresentado pelas amostras estocadas a -20ºC tenha sido menor que o observado nas amostras estocadas a -80ºC. Suspensões virais, acrescidas de glicerina e congeladas a -20ºC, mostraram títulos próximos aos observados em amostras congeladas a -80ºC, sem glicerina. Quando estocadas a 4ºC, as amostras provenientes de passagens em células GBK permaneceram viáveis por até 44 dias, enquanto que aquelas procedentes de células RK13 mantiveram-se viáveis por 32 dias.
