Resumo: The copulation behaviour of Panopeus rugosus is described for a couple held in captivity. The copulation, which took place when both animals were in the intermolt period, followed the same pattern verified for most of the Xanthidae Family species, with the male assuming an upper posture while the female was under it. The female was active during the whole process. The mean duration of the copulation was 3.50 +/- 1.12h. The copulatory behaviour was very similar to that of the other species of this family. The calcified consistency of the exoskeleton during the copula, as well as its quick duration, when compared to other branquiuran crabs, may be adaptations to semi-terrestrial life providing this species with a greater protection against predation.

Durante a cópula os dois exemplares encontram-se em intermuda, com o macho posicionado superiormente tendo sua região ventral justaposta à da fêmea que é carregada sob si. A fêmea mostrou-se ativa durante todo o processo, cuja duração média foi de 3,50 +/- 1,12h. A cópula seguiu um padrão similar ao verificado para a maioria das espécies da Família Xanthidae já estudadas.
