Resumo: The aim of this work was to observe the growth rate and survival of Piaractus mesopotamicus (pacu) and Colossoma macropomum (tambaqui) cultured in the laboratory and fed with natural plankton (phytoplankton and zooplankton), during 40 days. The larvae were 4 days old. They were reared in continuous flow aquaria and fed with natural plankton, daily. The growth rates for each species was relatively similar. The maximum lenght for C. macropomum was 1.8 cm and 1.7 cm for P. mesopotamicus. In relation to fresh weight, a value of 58.1 mg was found for C. macropomum and 57.7 mg for P. mesopotamicus. The final values of dry weight were 13.1 mg and 7.4 mg, respectively.

The final values of dry weight were 13.1 mg and 7.4 mg, respectively.O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a taxa de crescimento e sobrevivência de Piaractus mesopotamicus (pacu) e Colossoma macropomum (tambaqui) cultivados em laboratório e alimentados com plâncton natural (zooplâncton e fitoplâncton) por um período de 40 dias. As larvas utilizadas tinham 4 dias de idade e foram cultivadas em aquários grandes, aerados e com fluxo de água contínuo. Diariamente foi adicionado aos aquários alimento natural destes animais, contituído de zooplâncton e fitoplâncton. Para avaliação do crescimento das larvas, registraram-se os valores de peso e comprimento. As taxas de crescimento para cada espécie foram relativamente semelhantes. Observou-se também que o incremento em peso por unidade de tempo de C. macropomum foi maior que o de P. mesopotamicus. O tamanho máximo foi de 1,8 cm para as larvas de C. macropomum e de 1,7 cm para as larvas de P. mesopotamicus. Em relação ao peso fresco, a primeira espécie atingiu 58,1 mg e a segunda 57,7 mg.
