Resumo: A study on the interactions between fishermen and marine mammals was carried out in three towns along the coast of the state of Paraná, southern Brazil. In general, the interaction between men and dolphins was considered positive for both species, because the dolphins help the fishermen by driving the fish into their nets, and consequently they are not treated as competitors. Also, due to local supertition, the animals were not disturbed. However, in relation to pinnipeds, the interaction was highly, negative, but only to the animals. They were frquently killed, either bu fire-arms or by heavy blows on their heads. Accidental catches in nets occurred, mainly involving small cetaceans, and in August 1998 a right whale was found with a net around its head. Usually, the animals were returned to the sea when accidentally captured, but accounts exist of dolphin consumption in all the towns where this study was realized. Neverthless, the accidental catches are rare and do not represent a threat to the marine mammal populatin on/along the coast of Paraná.
